The Most Dangerous Man

Today's post is going to be a short one. Lunch is almost done and there are things to get onto like my lawn tractor. My lawn is slowly starting to resemble a meadow and I'm sure the neighbors will start to talk soon.

I have been following the debate about the proposed changes to the way politicians are elected here in Canada. The biggest issue these days is if there should be a referendum or not. The Conservative Party wants one as does a majority (73%) of Canadians. Meanwhile the Liberals don't

Why?

I suspect there are two reasons for this. First any new system will probably favor the other parties where first past the post (FPTP) doesn't and this is a threat to the CP regaining a majority. The second reason not to have a referendum is the majority of Canadians can't be counted upon by the Liberals to vote in favor. The Liberals are afraid of "that guy" as described by H.L.Mencken.

Over the years I have come to one conclusion about politicians. One could say that they are drawn to power like moths are to a flame but I don't think that's true. From the machinations I have seen over the years I believe politicians are drawn to power like a shark is drawn to blood. It is for this reason that there should be a referendum. If nothing more a referendum is a check against a potential power grab.
